Legacy Giving and the Encore Society

Support the Future of Music. Leave a Lasting Legacy.

For more than 135 years, The Royal Conservatory of Music has shaped Canada’s cultural landscape through excellence in music education and performance. A legacy gift helps ensure this work continues for generations to come.

When you include the RCM in your estate plans, you become part of the Encore Society — a community of thoughtful donors who believe in the power of music to transform lives

Why Leave a Legacy Gift?

Legacy gifts play a critical role in the long-term sustainability of the RCM. They provide support for:

  • Access to music education for students from all backgrounds
  • High-quality programming at Koerner Hall
  • Emerging artists in the Glenn Gould School and The Phil and Eli Taylor Performance Academy for Young Artists
  • Nationally recognized programs like RCM Smart Start and the Oscar Peterson Program
  • New digital tools and learning platforms
  • The preservation and advancement of Canada’s musical heritage

Whether your connection to the RCM comes through lessons, exams, concerts, or giving, your legacy gift reflects your values — and your belief in the importance of music in society.

The Encore Society

The Encore Society recognizes donors who have chosen to include the RCM in their will or estate plans. Members receive:

  • Invitations to exclusive Encore Society events and donor gatherings
  • Concierge ticketing support for Koerner Hall performances
  • Invitations to select rehearsals and student showcases
  • Advance notice of concert programming and season announcements
  • Recognition in online and print donor listings (optional)
  • A welcome package and annual letter from the RCM President or Dean

Ways to Leave a Legacy

Legacy gifts are flexible and simple to arrange. Common options include:

  • A gift in your will (bequest): The most common type of legacy gift, allowing you to designate a specific amount, percentage, or residue of your estate
  • RRSPs, RRIFs, or TFSAs: Naming the RCM as a beneficiary is a tax-efficient and easy way to give
  • Life Insurance: You can donate a new or existing policy
  • Gifts of Property/In Kind: Outright gifts of property such as real estate, artwork and musical instruments are accepted "in kind" based on suitability
  • Publicly traded securities: Gifts of appreciated investments can offer tax benefits
  • Charitable remainder trusts or other planned arrangements (please speak with your advisor)

Your legal or financial advisor can help determine what type of gift best fits your goals.

We chose a Legacy gift because it feels good to know that we're part of a world class music Conservatory that will last beyond us.
