Voucher Request Policy
What is a Voucher?
- Vouchers can be redeemed by any candidate (not just the original candidate or their siblings), for the full cost of the same examination and level.
- Vouchers have no expiration date.
- No examination vouchers are granted to candidates who fail to appear for their scheduled examination and do not submit a formal voucher request.
- No examination vouchers are granted if The Royal Conservatory is unable to accommodate a special request (other than religious restrictions).
- There are no academic penalties for missed examinations.
Who can apply for a voucher?Candidates can only apply for a voucher due to the following reasons:
Direct time conflict with a school examination
- Supported by a letter on official school letterhead, signed and dated by a school official. This letter must specify the date of the school examination that directly conflicts with the candidate's music examination (i.e., general dates of school examinations will not be accepted).
Medical reasons that involve the candidate
- Supported by a physician's letter on the official letterhead of the doctor's office, and that is signed and dated by the doctor.
When and how to submit:- The “Voucher Request Form” should be filled out and submitted to The Royal Conservatory along with supporting documentation (e.g., a letter from a physician or school authority on school letterhead).
- Forms may be physically mailed or emailed in an attachment (instructions found on Voucher Request Form).
- Voucher Request Forms must be received no later than 2 weeks after the missed exam’s original date. Requests received after this time will be denied.
- Candidates wishing to use their approved voucher in the session immediately after their cancelled exam must submit this form a minimum of 5 business days before the registration deadline of the Session you plan to register for. Late fees and paper registration fees will be applied to registrations if the Voucher Request is not received in this timeframe.
How to use your voucher:- To redeem an examination voucher, candidates must manually apply the redemption code upon their next registration process. Vouchers are not automatically applied.
- Approved examination vouchers may only be used once. No additional vouchers, extensions or refunds will be provided for examinations once they have been used.

Duplicate Certificate / Diploma / Medals Results: Please consult a current syllabus to ensure that you have fulfilled the certificate requirements for your grade before submitting the request form to The Royal Conservatory. Then:
1. Please fill out a request form and fax/email to The Royal Conservatory
2. Once we receive your form, you will then be able to pay online.
Duplicate Practical and Theory Examination Results: students may request copies of their previous theory exam results and practical marking forms. Please note these requests are only available for the past 3 years.

- Late Examination Registration Requests (formerly known as Late Paper Applications)
We do not offer Late Registration for remote practical exams, Theory Levels 5 - 8, nor History 9 - ARCT.
Late Registration is offered for remote Advanced Theory (Harmony, Counterpoint, Analysis) and all Speech Arts Theory/History subjects. Late registration is subject to an additional handling fee.

Candidates who cannot demonstrate clear equivalents to Royal Conservatory theory examinations may apply for permission to write the Academic Qualifying Examination (formerly known as the Comprehensive Theory Examination). To apply for permission to write the Academic Qualifying Examination, or to request a package of Sample Academic Qualifying Examination Papers, please complete the Exemption Request for an Academic Qualifying Examination Form.

- Re-Calculation/Re-Evaluation of a Theory Examination
Re-Calculation of a Theory Examination Mark
A student may request a re-calculation of the mark awarded on a written theory examination if there was an error in the tabulation of marks or an unmarked question. The student must submit this form containing:- the Confirmation Number for the examination paper(s),
- a written explanation of the error, and
- the re-calculation fee.
Please note that a re-calculation of marks may raise, lower, or confirm the original mark. If an error is found in the student’s favor, the fee will be refunded.
Re-Evaluation of a Theory Examination
A student may request a re-evaluation of a written theory examination if there has been inconsistent marking or the student requires clarification of the mark received. The student must submit this form containing:- the Confirmation Number for the examination paper(s),
- a description of which questions appear to be marked inconsistently or require explanation, citing specific examples, and
- the re-evaluation fee.
The examination will be reviewed by a member of the RCM College of Examiners and returned with a written critique of the appropriate questions. Please note that a re-evaluation may raise, lower, or confirm the original mark. If the re-evaluation results in a higher mark, the fee will be refunded.
Deadlines for Requesting a Re-Calculation or Re-Evaluation- March 1 for theory examinations written in the previous December (winter session)
- October 1 for theory examinations written in the previous May (spring session)
- November 1 theory examinations written in the previous August (summer session)
Please allow four weeks for the processing of all requests.

- Accessibility (formerly Special Needs) Request
Candidates who have accessibility requirements may submit a request to the RCM Certificate Program for accommodations. Such requests must be made immediately after registration. The RCM Certificate Program will consider each case individually.

- Substitute Piece Request
A Substitute Piece Request form must be submitted if a piece you wish to include in your examination program does meet the substitution criteria outlined in the Syllabus. The form is to be submitted by the examination registration deadline of the session you wish to use the piece. You will receive notice of whether the request has been approved or denied by email within four weeks. If approved, you must bring the approval form with you to the examination and submit it to the examiner. Approved Substitute Pieces are only valid for the session indicated below.
IMPORTANT: Please ensure an alternate piece is prepared in case the substitute request is denied.

Students may request official transcripts from The Royal Conservatory of Music by completing a Request for Official Transcript. Please allow 2 to 4 weeks for processing.
- Transfer Credits
Transfer Credits for Theory Examinations
Transfer credits are offered for several theory examinations required for The RCM Certificate Program. Transfer credits are assessed based on the equivalency to each level’s requirements outlined in the Theory Syllabus, 2016 Edition. You may be eligible to receive a transfer credit for one or more the following theory examinations:
- Level 8 Theory
- Level 9 Harmony
- Level 9 History
- Level 10 Harmony & Counterpoint
- Level 10 History
Transfer credits for ARCT Harmony & Counterpoint, ARCT History, and ARCT Analysis are not available. Credit for these subjects may only be earned by completing the examination and achieving a passing mark.
Transfer Credit Eligibility
Transfer credits may be granted to students who have completed an:
- equivalent certificate from another recognized examination system, or
- a music degree from an accredited university
Transfer Credits with a CertificateStudents who have earned a certificate from a recognized examination system other than the RCM Certificate Program may apply to receive credit for the equivalent Theory examination offered by the RCM Certificate Program.

To apply for a transfer credit with a certificate from a recognized examination system other than the RCM Certificate Program, fill out this form and submit a copy of your certificate.Transfer Credits with a Music Degree
Students who have completed a music degree from an accredited university may apply to receive credit for the equivalent Theory examination(s) offered by the RCM Certificate Program.
To apply for transfer credits with a music degree, fill out this form and submit the following documentation:- proof of degree completion,
- a copy of your transcript showing your final mark in the relevant courses, and
- a copy of the course outline or syllabus prepared by the instructor for each of the relevant courses.
Do not submit class assignments, letters of recommendation, curriculum vitae, or résumés.
Please allow four to six weeks for processing once you have submitted your application along with the supporting documentation. Each application will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis, and students may be granted credit for all, some, or none of their requested transfer credits.Transfer Credits for the Associate Diploma (ARCT) in Pedagogy
Piano or Violin candidates who have passed the ARCT, Performer examination may apply to be exempted from the Repertoire section of the Advanced Pedagogy Practical Examination. The remaining sections of the Practical Examination must be taken within five years of the date of the ARCT, Performer Examination.
Piano or Violin candidates who already hold a Teacher’s ARCT Diploma and wish to enrich their qualifications may apply for permission to complete the Advanced Pedagogy certificate. Such candidates may apply to be exempted from the Advanced Pedagogy Practical Examination.

- Practice Theory Assessment
Candidates may submit practice examination papers to be marked by a member of The Royal Conservatory’s College of Examiners, and receive feedback to aid in their preparation for written examinations. The results and examiner's comments are for your reference only and should be used as tools for review and improvement, and will not count toward your official examination mark.
